Thank you for your interest in Residence for the 2023 – 2024 academic year!
Whether you’re currently in Residence or living off campus, we are pleased that you are considering becoming a member of our community. While the majority of our students are in first year studies, a limited number of beds are reserved for returning students. This number could increase through the summer depending on the number of first year guaranteed students.
Applications open on February 1, 2023 at 10:00 am and close on February 15, 2023 at 4:30 pm in order to be included in the one time lottery for the first round of offers. The application will re-open in Carleton Central in the middle to end of March at which point, students who did not previously apply may join the waitlist.
We have made changes to our building assignment eligibility. Upper year students will be eligible to apply for any building regardless of year of study. There will no longer be a “Leeds only” application and Frontenac House will no longer be limited to students in second year studies. Please note that LEEDS (6th floor and part of 5th floor are still exclusive to Graduate students), and FRONTENAC houses will remain upper year residences (first year students won`t be assigned to these houses).
Please read the information below before you log on to Carleton Central to submit your application.
*Current ESP / IESP students wishing to apply to residence are not able to do so through Carleton Central. Please email residence@carleton.ca in order to start your application.
Students with “Special Student” status are not eligible for residence.
The 2022 – 2023 Residence Agreement can be viewed here. The 2023-2024 Residence Agreement will be available by June 2023.
- Eligibility Requirement
-
All students are welcome to apply. Preference is given to students who are enrolled in and achieve three full credits in the current year (and for 2022 – 2023). Exceptions are considered, but not guaranteed. This will be reviewed after you apply.
All offers made prior to the release of grades in May are conditional and may be revoked if the three credit requirement is not met. Applicants not meeting the requirement will be given an opportunity to appeal any decision to revoke their offer/application.
Students who accept their offer will be required to pay a deposit of $700. If upon the release of final marks in May, a student is unsuccessful in meeting the requirements or if unsuccessful in their appeal, the offer will be revoked and deposit returned, minus a $25 processing fee.
Please note that any outstanding Housing related fees must be paid in full prior to May 1, 2023 or the offer will be rescinded and deposit refunded, minus a $25 service charge.
Furthermore, as noted in the Residence Standards, should the Department of Housing and Residence Life Services consider that the behaviour and conduct of a resident has not been appropriate and within the spirit of beneficial community living, the resident may be refused participation in the processes of application to residence in a subsequent year, regardless of academic standing.

- Room Offer/Waitlist Information
-
A one time lottery is conducted for those who submitted an application between February 1 – 15. The lottery randomly selects from those applicants and determines who receives a room offer or who goes on the waitlist. The one time lottery takes place near the end of February and results are sent out mid-March. Students applying after room offers and waitlist emails are sent may apply to be added to the end of the waitlist. The application will re-open in Carleton Central around the middle to end of March at which point, students who did not previously apply may join to be placed at the end of the waitlist.
Offers and waitlist letters will be sent to your Carleton cmail account. Students successful in receiving an offer will be required to accept their offer online and pay the deposit of $700 on Carleton Central. If you choose the Interac option, you must pay through the on line acceptance process on Carleton Central and NOT directly from your bank account.
More information about the waitlist can be found by clicking here.
Room offers to students on the waitlist will continue throughout the summer as space become available. It is extremely important that you check your Carleton email on a regular basis, as we will be using this to communicate with you.
- Room Assignment Process for Returning Students
-
Room Assignment Process
Returning students have the opportunity to request specific buildings and/or type of residence in the Residence Information Form. Rooms are assigned according to the order determined by lottery. Students may request suitemates/canmates and are otherwise matched according to responses to questions on the Residence Information Form.
For more information about the room assignment process for returning students, click here.
Roommate/Suitemate Assignment
Roommate matching for suites and traditional double rooms is based on the answers provided on the Residence Information Form. Please answer these questions as accurately as possible so that we can find the best possible match of roommate/suitemate for you.
Some factors that we take into consideration when matching roommates/suitemates are:
- Age
- Faculty
- Request for all gender/single gender floors
- Smoking (although all residences are smoke free)
- Answers regarding personal lifestyle
If there is someone with whom you would like to share a room, you can indicate so on the Residence Information Form. Click here to learn how to indicate your roommate preferences.
Room Changes
We will begin accepting room change requests on September 29. Room changes are offered on a first come, first serve basis according to student type and availability. While every attempt is made to accommodate room change requests, a new room assignment is not always readily available. Residents will be contacted if and when there is a new room assignment to consider. More information regarding room changes can be found here.
