Here are the compiled nominations for the 2020-2021 Favourite Faculty members:

  • Ahmed Almaskut (Mathematics and Statistics): Supportive, always available to ask questions and really considers how to make the course better for students.

  • Andrew Robinson (Physics): It is very evident that he cares about his students’ wellbeing both in the class and beyond. His course has been transitioned online very nicely and he asks for feedback and makes adjustments to ensure that it is manageable and educational for his students. He is very aware that this is a difficult adjustment for students and he is being very supportive while still providing us with the content we need. He is obviously putting a lot of time and effort into this course and it is very appreciated!

  • Basile Roussel (French): Basile wants every student to do well in his class. He works hard to ensure that everyone understands the content and improves through practice and application. It is clear that Professor Roussel has a passion for linguistics, which inspires his students to learn. Overall, I think that Basile is a fantastic professor!

  • Bob Burk (Chemistry): Because he’s always willing to help with any confusion of the material, plus has a great sense of humour.

  • Brooke Eagle (School of Social Work): She is amazing! She has been a huge help in assisting all BSW students to figure out the process and plan next steps for placement.

  • Celine Bonnotte-Hoover (French): Celine goes out of her way to make her class interactive and fun! I really enjoy all of the activities with the interactive whiteboard. She is also really patient and understanding when answering everyone’s questions. She was really open to feedback in the beginning of the year and adjusted the cuLearn page accordingly. I wish the class was even longer because I look forward to it every week.

  • Caitlin Manuel (Disability Studies): Very relatable TA, makes a zoom call welcoming which is a huge challenge this year. Replies to your emails as fast as she can, which is extremely appreciated. Makes a zoom call more like an in-person discussion group, which most of my TA cants achieve.

  • Candace Sobers (History): Professor Sobers cares about the well-being of her students and holds us all to high academic standards so that we perform well as students.

  • Charles Starling (Mathematics): Always very helpful when I ask him questions, really quick at replying to emails and does a very good job of supporting students!

  • Christine Laurendeau (Computer Science): Her Synchronous, and Asynchronous lectures are high energy. She’s done a great job adapting her course to online learning.

  • Christopher Motz (Psychology): He puts so much effort into his lectures to ensure that students enjoy the class. He makes amazing jokes and keeps high energy throughout his teaching to actually make the lessons fun and not boring. He really made the transition to online learning manageable. He keeps class engaging and fun, and he puts in the most effort into online class out of all of my teachers.

  • Connor Hillen (Computer Science): He made everything easy to understand which made learning it super easy. Je had in person lectures which helped a tonne as well.

  • Conrad Winn (Political Science): Dr. Winn values all of his students’ thoughts and encourages students to disagree with him on certain topics. Dr. Winn also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience working in the area of public affairs.

  • Dave Brock (Chemistry): I found him to be very helpful when I have questions about the course and he seems to be a nice person to learn from.

  • David Mckenny (Computer Science): The Professor is hard working, helpful and is taking a bold initiative to change the way web development is taught at Carleton. This is highly appreciated by a student who loves web development. He gets back to students quickly and is almost always available for questions. The course content is structured and well organized. He is also very nice :)

  • Deborah Landry (Sociology): She has been nothing but supportive, understanding, open and truthful through this semester. In short she acted like a person talking to another person  .She is one of the only classes that do not stress me out. Not to do with work but the need to show up/talk to her. She has made my first year experience a glimmer of hope for previous years to have kind professors. Also she is the one class that I have found to learn beyond the content and the ability to apply other disciplines to sociology and real life.

  • Devin Vu (Business): Awesome guy

  • Esther Post (English): They’ve been through a lot this semester and have been trying their best in a really hard situation while still helping students. Keep up the great work!

  • Geoffrey Pignotta (Earth Sciences): Great teacher, very engaging!

  • George Harrison (Greek and Roman Studies): Professor Harrison is the most charismatic, hilarious, kind, and knowledgeable teacher I have ever had. He has made every class special, unique and interesting and he answers all the weird questions I have no matter how many times I put my hand up. He is my favourite professor and would take every class he taught if I could. He makes every unit and topic interesting to learn, and even if I didn’t care about it going into the class, I left wanting to know more! He is one of those professors that makes a difference in the students lives, and I know that because he made a difference in mine.

  • Hannah Johnston (Information Technology): She is a great teacher that puts a lot of effort into making her course content interesting and relatable to her students. I appreciate her being so involved with us and her lectures have good jokes :)

  • James Cheetham (Biology): He sends pictures of memes or his cat in his emails.

  • James McGowan (Music): Dr. McGowan is an amazing teacher. When he teaches me, I always understand things fully and I enjoy learning them. He is a magnificently nice and kind individual that is excellent at making genuine connections with his students. Even when things go wrong, he is able to laugh off mistakes, his own or otherwise, and he is able to move right into fixing them in a fair and equitable way. To top it all off he is absolutely hilarious and will be cracking jokes nearly the entire time he teaches. To summate, I always enjoy being in his classes and will continue to take them whenever possible as I will always learn what I need to know and more, and I will enjoy doing it.

  • James Milner (Political Science): He is an amazing academic, helpful, knowledgeable and considerate.Professor Milner demonstrates that he truly does understand how difficult the online format may be for some of us. His lectures and videos explaining the upcoming assignments are extremely useful and do not lead me needing to email the TA or prof himself back and forth like my other classes. Migration was not a concept of interest to me before this course, cannot imagine how interesting his lectures would have been in person.

  • Jay Jennings (Computer Science): Jay is arguably the only reason I have been successful in Computation Methods this year. His tutorial is always super informative and helpful, and he is always willing to help when I reach out outside of class time. He is also extremely nice when you go to him for help, and never makes any students feel insecure for asking questions. It is a warm and positive environment, and one of the few classes I look forward to each week. I do not believe I would be receiving a good grade in this class without Jay’s help.

  • Joanne Farrall (First Year Seminar): She always makes time to meet with students and cares a lot about if we understand the material. She puts a lot of time into giving us feedback and writing the course modules and her course has taught me so much about reading and writing in a university setting. I think she genuinely cares about her students’ success and demonstrates that in her teaching.

  • Julie Caldwell (Business): She always comes to class with a smile and she clearly loves what she does.

  • Karen Taylor (Mechanical Engineering): She made online learning as very seamless transition.

  • Kerry Badgley (History): He cares dearly and sincerely for the care, comfort, and well-being of his students and excels as a professor with his immense span of historical knowledge and effective traditional teaching methods. He regularly motivates us and gives us positive feedback and even asked us before the semester started to send him a brief summary about ourselves so he could better appreciate and understand us. He is the professor I look forward to meeting the most by far and deserves more recognition for his skill and style as a professor. Thank you.

  • Kevin Nunes (Psychology): Kevin is always willing to accommodate and work with students when they need it.

  • Kim Hellemans (Neuroscience): Dr Hellemans has gone above and beyond this year helping students transition to online learning. She always offers extensive support to students who may be struggling and is extremely approachable. While the classroom setting is virtual, she has still managed to make her students feel welcome and comfortable speaking with her, the TAs, and each other. She truly cares about her students and their mental health and wants the best for all of us. She is always very encouraging and a wonderful person to talk to when you’ve had a rough day. Dr Hellemans takes so much time out of her day to spend on her students and it really shows. For these reasons (and many more), Dr Hellemans is my favourite faculty member. Super caring about her students! She’s really involved, all her lectures are really interactive, listening to her students. Also she’s adorable. Super fun and engaging and makes an effort to engage with us outside of class. Has office hours by appointment and takes the time to get to know you and follow up with you. In such a big class it’s nice to feel like an individual and have your professor remember your name and previous conversations, it really makes you feel like she cares and takes pride in her work.

  • Kyle Harvey (Mathematics): Amazing professor, really helped me understand and grasp calculus.

  • Lori Rosove (Linguistics and Language Studies): I really like Professor Rosove because of the way she has been teaching this course. The assignments are so much fun to do, and she is very understanding of our situations during this pandemic. I am happy that I got to take her class because of how she delivers the materials/lectures, despite that it is online.

  • Luz-Patricia Lopez (Spanish): I was very nervous about taking language classes online but she teaches it in a way that is engaging and as least stressful, as I think it could be. She is super organized with cuLearn and she sends out weekly emails so we know what we are doing in class each week.  She is really understanding and patient with us and I can tell she truly wants us to succeed.

  • Marc Saurette (History): Marc is so engaging, very knowledgeable, and shares many interesting facts with the class. He creates a great class environment (for online too!) and he took the opportunity to get to know all of us and talk to us outside class. His teaching style is very engaging (perfect for a seminar) and he’s super funny (making class extremely enjoyable).

  • Mark Blenkinsop (Mathematics): He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone knows the material, and he also make calculus more fun to learn. He definitely made learning it online a lot easier for everyone this year. He is also very welcoming and makes sure everyone is included in our lectures/discussions. He’s always available and open to answer questions and makes the lectures entertaining and instructive. He always makes it so your questions feel important and significant even tho most of them are probably trivial to him. I enjoy the effort he puts into helping his students learn.

  • Matthew Sorley (Psychology): He is always really engaging in his lectures, and he is always willing to help students. Always makes class interesting, genuinely cares about his students. Professor Sorley is truly passionate about what he teaches and is readily available for both academic and personal support. • Miles C. Tittle (English): Very entertaining and engaging with the class. Always listens to all of his students.

  • Myles Erickson (Political Science): Myles quite simply goes above and beyond. They are incredibly approachable and accessible during and outside of office hours. My tutorial environments are probably the most comfortable out of any class. Plus, I can’t stress how much I appreciate their guide to writing essays and their pointers on academic papers as a first year trying to navigate a class of mostly second years. I want them to know that everyone in their A03 and A06 tutorials have nothing but nice things to say. Thank you, Myles!

  • Pamela Wolff (Chemistry): Because she is nice and humble, unlike most professors

  • Paul Van Geel (Civil and Environmental Engineering): He genuinely takes an interest in and asks about the students at the end of class, and gives us frequent updates about the outline and his class. He encourages us for other classes as well, and validates my stress and wishes us luck in things he knows are happening in other classes like midterms and major projects. He is the only prof who has reached out.

  • Peter Coffman (Art & Architectural History): His class is formatted best out of all of the courses I am enrolled in, despite the fact that it is completely asynchronous. He is technologically savvy enough that I feel the class is comparable to an in-person lecture. I am very happy with the quality of information that is being delivered and its format. Thank you!

  • Philippe-Antoine Hoyeck (Philosophy): Phil with Phil is my favourite because Phil is doing a great job teaching his class online. He is consistent and reliable, with his classes being easy to follow. He also provides optional reading for those that are interested in current issues in philosophy. Phil is also a very likable guy, when he hosts live lectures/study sessions not only is he making himself available for academic support but he makes the class more enjoyable with his use of examples and his whiteboard for doodling.

  • Ramon J Cova (Mathematics and Statistics): Dr. Cova keeps me motivated and interested in math. His online lectures are fun and his sense of humor is just great. He uses multiple techniques to ensure understanding of the course. I thoroughly enjoy starting my day with his online learning approach!

  • Randy Boswell (Journalism): He is supportive, kind and extremely knowledgeable!

  • Roz Dakin (Biology): Very considerate with my PMC accommodations and was super sweet and understanding when I had to take time off school for a funeral in the states. Also they are very passionate about the subject they are teaching and helped make our course load lighter when we were all overwhelmed with online classes.

  • Sarah Brouillette (English): They make the context engaging and easy to understand while offering brilliant insights of the works we study.

  • Sarah Everts (Journalism): In the disaster of the 2020 online school year, it was, and continues to be, very hard to keep up motivation to load up lectures and join zoom calls. Despite this, I have always looked forward to Professor Evert’s Q&As and lectures. The reading and listening materials always keep me engaged and make me excited to test my knowledge on the quizzes. Even while pulling all-nighters on assignments I should’ve finished weeks ago, I still was interested in what I was learning from her. Professor Everts is awesome to talk to and inspires me to persevere with this online school year. I hope that I can keep learning from her in the future.

  • Sefa Hayibor (Business): He’s very cool, and gives interesting classes. Fun professor and is always there to make sure that his students succeed.

  • Sophie Tamas (Geography): Sophie has adapted our class to online learning in a way that is very engaging without increasing the workload. They have made an effort to listen to their students and take our feedback and change the course accordingly. Sophie’s class has been really interesting without being tedious.

  • Sydney Buttera (Chemistry): Nice music, and made an effort to reach out to students and actually read the feedback.

  • Trish Audette-Longo (Journalism): She is very friendly, takes into account student’s opinions and concerns and regularly checks in and makes herself available to us!

  • Vandna Bhatia (Political Science): Very understanding and compassionate about the well-being of their students, and very effective in breaking down the course material.

  • Zachary Patterson (Neuroscience): My favourite professor because he is so understanding and wants to be there for students and makes this obvious. His classes are exciting because you can tell he is passionate about teaching and the stuff we are learning about.
