Residence Fellows
A Residence Fellow (RF) is an upper year student who lives in residence to provide support and guidance to students. They are a role model, front-line resource, and developer of community with a commitment to creating a community conducive to learning and inclusion. RFs are part of a nightly on-call schedule.
If you are experiencing a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, your Residence Fellow is available for you. They will also connect you with a network of professional supports to help address concerns in a confidential manner.
Residence Fellow Candidate Qualities
Candidates selected as Residence Fellows often have experience in and a passion for providing service to others. These students can clearly articulate both the challenges and tremendous benefits and opportunities that accompany living in residence. Suitable candidates will be self-motivated, take initiative and be capable of functioning both independently and within a group. This individual must possess excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and be willing to commit their efforts to enhance the residence life experience by fostering a culture of community and personal engagement. This position should be viewed as a lifestyle commitment.
Training
All Residence Fellows participate in Spring Orientation to prepare them for the upcoming year. Residence Fellows also receive a week and a half of intensive skills training at the end of August. The Department of Housing and Residence Life Services also provides ongoing training opportunities for the Residence Fellows throughout the year to support them with meaningful personal and professional development.
Residence Fellows gain SafeTalk designation, diversity training, 2SLGBTQ+ awareness and education, bystander support and a network of campus partners. Residence Fellows also develop transferable skills including teamwork, leadership, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation.
Compensation
- Residence accommodation, fees and meal plan are provided for one academic year. The meal plan is all access.
- A stipend of $250 is given to each Residence Fellow for the successful completion of August training.
Residence Reception Desk
Students working at the Residence Desk are a resource and first point of contact for the Carleton residence community and general public.
Academic Year
From September-April, Residence Desk student staff offer 24/7 support to the residence community. The Residence Desk can assist with Campus Card printing and troubleshooting, lockouts and lost keys, residence mail processing, general information, and many other services.
Summer
From May-August, Residence Desk staff support summer conference guests in addition to summer residence students. Students working at the Residence Desk support conference services with preparing key packages, performing room checks, and greeting groups who are staying in our hotel-style accommodations, among other tasks.
Training
All Residence Desk staff participate in a week-and-a-half long training period at the end of August (or beginning of May for summer staff). In addition to practical, hands-on training on all Residence Desk operations, student staff also receive intensive skills training in areas such as communication, service excellence, de-escalation, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. All Residence Desk staff receive SafeTALK certification as part of their training. Returning desk staff and Team Leads also receive training in leadership, role modelling, and peer mentorship.
Compensation
Students working at the Residence Desk are paid an hourly wage and typically work 10-20 hours per week during the academic year. During the summer, the Residence Desk employs students in full time and part time roles. Students who work at the Residence Desk may choose to live on or off campus while employed at the desk.

Raven’s Roost
Raven’s Roost is a student lounge and recreation area located in the tunnel level between Stormont House and Dundas House. This is where a wide variety of residence programming happens including open-mic nights, talent shows, movie marathons and much more! Residence Peer Conduct Board
The Residence Peer Conduct Board (RPCB) is comprised of students, forming two boards that hear cases related to violations of the Residence Standards. Members review incident reports, interview students who have been involved in alleged misconduct and make decisions about responsibility. Outcomes for violating Residence Standards are recommended by the RPCB.
Mental Wellness Mentors
The Mental Wellness Mentor program provides peer-to-peer interactions allowing students to share their experiences and feel supported in all aspects of their university life. Working as a Mental Wellness Mentor provides an opportunity for students to be leaders in the residence community and help other students overcome a variety of different challenges.
Leadership Team
Members of the Leadership Team are upper year students with previous experience as an RF. They live in residence and provide support and guidance to students.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Community Leaders
An Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Community Leader (EDI CL) is an upper year student who is a mentor, resource person, helper, and advocate for our equity deserving students in residence. With a firm commitment to creating an inclusive residence experience, they are responsible for promoting and implementing learning experiences that strengthen Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous awareness in the community. They also provide equity-centred learning opportunities for students living in residences to prompt reflection for personal growth and advocate for the needs of equity-deserving students.
Community Advisors
A Community Advisor (CA) is an upper year student who is a mentor, resource person, helper, and guide for students in residence. They are responsible for creating a community conducive to learning and reflection, by recognizing students who positively contribute to the community and by following up with students who have violated the Residence Standards.
Community Developers
A Community Developer (CD) is an upper year student who is a mentor, resource person, helper, and community builder for students in residence. They are responsible for creating a community conducive to learning and development, by planning residence-wide initiatives and encouraging students to foster relationship building.
