Mashkikì Pakesàyà Medicine Room

Located in Stormont House 262, this cultural space provides a place for ceremony, dialogue and learning. The Mashkikì Pakesàyà Medicine Room is available to all Indigenous students living in residence as a community space.

This dedicated space is smudge-friendly and fosters a sense of serenity for smudging ceremonies, a culturally significant practice for many Indigenous students. It is maintained to honour this tradition and create a welcoming environment for the Indigenous community. Our hope is that in this sacred space, Indigenous students are able to honour their heritage, celebrate their present and build a future grounded in unity and respect.

Accessing the Mashkikì Pakesàyà Medicine Room

All Indigenous students can gain access to the room using their campus card. Simply, visit the Residence Reception Desk, or fill out this quick form, and we’ll activate your access within 2-3 business days.

Please Note: If you self-identified as Indigenous on your application, access has been placed on your Campus Card automatically.

Honouring Tradition: Smudging Student’s Room

At Housing and Residence Life Services, we recognize the importance of smudging in the Indigenous culture. As a sacred ceremony, smudging cleanses and purifies the atmosphere. It is well-known to promote mental and emotional well-being in the Indigenous culture while strengthening the connections to the world.

We understand that smudging can be a powerful tool for Indigenous students living in residence. As an Indigenous student, if you would like to smudge your residence room, you must submit a smudging request following these steps:

  1. Fill out a Work Order through the Housing Portal.
  2. If you need assistance, select “Other” from the work order category.
  3. In the text box, clearly state “Smudge Residence Room.”

To perform the ceremony, you have two options:

  1. Smudge on your own: You are welcome to smudge your room yourself using appropriate protocols.
  2. Request assistance: We can connect you with someone from the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement (CISCE) who can guide you through the smudging process.

We’re Here to Help!

If you have any questions or require further information, please reach out to Carleton Residence or contact the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful living environment that honours your cultural practices.
