Here are the compiled nominations for the 2019-2020 Favourite Faculty members:

  • Aaron Ettinger (Political Science): He speaks very passionately and intelligently in his lectures. It is the only 8:30 lecture that I enjoy waking up for and no matter how tired I am, his engaging style of presentation keeps me awake and engaged through the entire lecture. Very interesting content and excellently taught. This class alone has fueled my passion for political science! Professor Ettinger, thank you for making world politics such an engaging and interesting course for me.

  • Allison Everett (Social Work): She is always so genuine, caring, and attentive to those around her both staff and students!

  • Alysha Kurji-Chagani (Criminology): Understanding, has a genuine interest in student success and always finds interesting ways to learn and make the class fun.

  • Amy Clanfield (Religion): made the class incredibly interesting and taught topics in a way that they would not normally have been looked at. She is awesome and makes me inspired to want to learn the course material. Class discussions are engaging and the readings she chooses are invaluable to the course while also being interesting. Prof Clanfield is passionate about her department, which is reflected in her class, making it enjoyable for her students. (She’s also super funny).

  • Andrew Robinson (Physics): So personal and caring, he is a real teacher, something that is not always as stressed upon in university. The atmosphere he creates is so inductive to learning and he goes above and beyond for his students. I wanted him to know he is very well respected amongst every single class member I have spoken to, such a rare and awesome accomplishments. Thank you Dr. Robinson for all of your hard work, it is NOT unnoticed whatsoever. He has an amazing sense of humour and his ties are exquisite. He genuinely cares about his students and wants us to do our best as well as be the best that we can be. He really knows how to teach and keep the class involved and interested in the class all the while making the subject of physics fun. Fun classes, fun teacher, understanding and gets the point across. Prof. Robinson has a really interactive way of teaching in his class which makes the comprehension of even complex concepts of physics go easy, and I have benefitted a lot from him in understanding the subject better than what I did at high school. He makes learning fun. Great sense of humour. Great selection of ties. You can tell he cares about us. He has a strong passion for physics and keeps the lectures interesting by engaging the class. He’s great at explaining topics in a new way that makes it easier to understand, and offers plenty of help. At the beginning of the semester, he covered integration in depth since the other 1st year engineering classes use it but never teach the basics, and him helping us with that was very thoughtful and incredibly valuable. Also, he always shows up to class cheerful and ready to go, with a new fabulous tie to show us. Professor Robinson is my favourite professor because he makes class entertaining. Occasionally he brings in props to demonstrate physical concepts, and he always makes jokes and funny comments that make class interesting, and keeps you engaged in the material. I also very much like how he teaches the class: lots of theory, some history, and lots of problems solved in class for practice. He is by far the most engaging professor I have. Every class is very interesting and he keeps the class engaged very well. I have a much easier time understanding what he teaches because he is very practical. Everything he teaches it is obvious he knows the important messages, and makes it clear the important things to know. I have him next semester as well and I’m thrilled. In highschool many of the teachers tell you about how University professors are uncaring and not empathetic, this professor is the exact opposite. He starts every lecture telling us what his tie is that day, he makes jokes about small things, like making one of the multiple choice answers 42 because that’s the meaning of life. He takes legitimate joy in teaching physics, he also provides an incredible about of resources to help students. He goes above and beyond everything that is expected from a professor, taking his class was a joy. Great at teaching. Seems like he wants us to succeed and will do his beat to explain things well (never skims over anything). Best thing is that he is open to talk and take questions at the end of class. Best professor.

  • Angelo Mingarelli (Mathematics): Always comes into class every day wanting to teach us, and does it fantastically! Thank you for your hard work and patience with our class. He’s just so happy! Never fails to put a smile on my face. Plus he teaches well. He’s hilarious and a great teacher. His classes are the best I’ve been to. He manages to keep multivariable calculus interesting and exciting, while doing a fantastic job explaining how to do it. He also shares some of his personal stories and interests which are both entertaining don’t retract from the content.

  • Ashley Thompson (Neuroscience): Ashley is so approachable, kind, and supportive of her students. I couldn’t imagine having another other professor to teach the honours workshop. I love the way he teaches and overall, he is a great guy. He responds to my emails asking for help in a very fast manner and he explains everything easily to me. I would love to have future classes with him. Very engaging throughout the entire lectures, for all lectures. Provides plenty of opportunities to students to ask questions, and is a great help during one on one help during his office hours. Great prof for an extremely hard course, and he does it well.

  • Brett Hooper (Industrial Design): Brett makes me excited to become a designer one day. Whenever he talks, he is full of passion. He always tells us how he really believes in us and make us want to do the same. Even if you’re not doing the best he makes sure to say something positive about your work to keep you motivated. He is the best teacher I have ever had who’s clearly not doing this job just for the money, but because he wants to pass on his knowledge about Industrial Design, and that really shows. I wouldn’t have any other instructor other than Brett.

  • Bruce Tsuji (Psychology): Dr. Tsuji is clearly interested in both his work and providing a high level of education for his students. He is flexible and accommodating towards all students, especially by allowing the opportunity for students to complete their class work depending on what works best for them. He is personable and creates a great relationship with his students, focusing on the real life circumstances in which psychology can be applied, as well as adding a more relaxed feel to his class. He is by far my favourite faculty member!

  • Cheryl Harasymchuk (Psychology): I like her methods of teaching. She tries her best to make the class fun.

  • Cheryl Schramm (Engineering): Interactive lessons, discovery learning approach, and talks with the class instead of at the class. I wake up for this 830! She teaches in a way that the most clueless person would understand and be able to grasp the concept.

  • Christopher McGrath (Philosophy): McGrath is a fun, easy-going professor who tries to make the lecture material more interesting even when it is not. He is always willing to offer students extra help, as well as ensure everyone knows what material they will be tested on. I think he is the best professor I have ever had because: first of all as a result of the way that he teaches all students can understand materials in class easily. He help all students as much as he can and he cars about his students. He is really calm and it impacts the class atmosphere in a very positive way. Long story short he is the best professor in Carleton University and absolutely my most favourite.

  • Christopher Stoney (Public Policy and Administration): The prof is engaged and helpful to students.

  • Clarissa Fernandes (Computer Science): Very kind and helpful.

  • Cynthia Cruickshank (Engineering): She really loves what she is doing. She cared about every individual student and half way through the semester she knew all of our names. She was always there when we needed her. I would not miss any of her lectures as they were all interesting and engaging. Never hesitates to answer our curiosity and never wanted to challenge us in her exams they were all fair. She understands what students go through and she is here to help. Unfortunately, I could not able to take any classes with her later on but I wish I did.

  • Danay Novoa (Psychology ): I am always excited for the class, it is so engaging and I always get so much out of it. She makes class worth going to and makes the hard concepts easy to understand. Her classes never leave me bored.

  • Danielle Kinsey (History): She was very easy to communicate with and made the transition from high school to first year very easy and fun with useful assignments and fun assignments. Discussions included everyone and I always felt eager to talk when usually I am scared to raise my hand and she made me feel validated. Thank you Dr. Kinsey. Dr. Kinsey is intelligent, intriguing and funny. She is always accessible and very open to discussion. She genuinely cares about her students and the course matter she’s teaching. She wants her students to succeed above all else and creates a safe, dynamic learning environment for all of us to do so. She is the reason I love my program. Professor Kinsey is my favourite faculty member because she is clearly dedicated to the success of her students. In class, I can tell that she cares and genuinely wants to know if I understand, if I am doing all right in my other classes, and if I am motivated to succeed. • David McKenney (Computer Science): Dave is my favorite faculty member because he is relatable and easy to follow when he teaches. He puts a level of effort and passion into his courses that you don’t usually see when compared to other instructors. I had him in first year and he made the introduction to programming very accessible and easy to understand, and now I have him in second year in his web development course where I have learned so much real world applicable knowledge from him and I am very thankful for that. He is knowledgeable, humorous, and overall very engaging with their students. I also really like that they made a Discord server for the class so students, TAs, and the professor can all easily interact with each other! Excellent communicator with engaging assignments, and a very understanding prof. I appreciate his classes. He is my favourite faculty member because he’s Dave. Dave is a GOD. Dave puts in the extra effort and it’s greatly appreciated by (in my opinion) most of the students. He is always enthusiastic about class and overall seems like a great person. He is my favourite faculty member because his lectures are interesting to listen to and because he’s the meme king. He is funny. G.O.A.T teacher. They’re a great professor, very helpful, accessible and funny.

  • Deirdre Kelly (Cognitive Science): Dr Kelly is an amazing professor. She makes learning seem not so boring especially at 8:30 in the morning! She’s super approachable and easy to talk to. She goes above and beyond to care for her students. She also helped me a lot when she told me about a research lab on campus that I didn’t even know existed before she told me!

  • Dennis Sakalauskas (School of Business): Dennis is my favourite faculty member for two main reasons. To begin, he is highly knowledgeable and passionate regarding the subject that he is teaching. As well, he is able to convey that knowledge to the class in a very compelling manner. This makes every class highly interesting and the three hours go by quickly! However, what makes Dennis stand out is the fact that he truly cares about each student, making himself readily available outside of class for discussions on class material, business ideas, future career paths and more.

  • Fiona Robinson (Political Science): One of the first instructors I’ve had in my entire school career who really made an effort to listen to students and encourage discussion in the classroom as opposed to just talking while we take notes. The course material is fascinating and her appreciation for the topics makes the class all the more interesting. This is the only class I’ve never once missed and I don’t intend to because I love it, all thanks to Dr. Robinson.

  • Jack Vandenburg (Engineering): Professor Vandenberg is my favourite facility member because he takes care of his students. Even with over 100 students, when I went to talk to him because I was worried and stressed out about what I got on the midterm he did his best to comfort me at the time. What really went the extra mile though was during one of my PA sessions, for the course he teaches, when we got the midterms back he came over to and asked how I did. Even though I wasn’t the only student he talked to, about the midterm, it was nice to know that he remembered.

  • James Cheetham (Biology): The cat memes are too good.

  • Jane Lalonde (Linguistics): Because she is focused on our success and takes her time with teaching us at our own pace.

  • Janice Schroeder (English): Prof Schroeder is a wonderfully kind and inspirational prof who truly cares about her students and manages to make every lecture both rewarding and inspiring.

She also has a very witty personality, and the assignments are so much fun to take on.

  • Jay Ramasubramanyam (Law and Legal Studies): Jay is a professor who cares about his students and their wellbeing. He tries to not pile to many things on to the students. Jay also is a professor that allows his students to share their opinion. Jay also cares about the wellbeing and mental health of his students. Jay is a great professor, his class is not mainstreamed and I am learning and have already learned concepts I would have never learned in a different professors class. He also makes an effort to connect with his students and shows that he truly cares about all of his students well beings, unlike many other professors.

  • Jesse Heilman (Physics): He provides relentless commitment to our academic growth, the development of our scientific culture, and has time and time again made me feel valued and recognized. Without him, the level of success I have attained would not be possible and the secondary to post secondary transition would have been much more difficult.

  • Jim Davies (Cognitive Science): Always kind, material is made fun and easy to understand, and he puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Super easy going, has a cool bike that’s like a triangle? he did a Ted talk in neon green suit with a matching phone case. like that’s some swagger if I’ve ever seen it. his glasses? they just attach to his face man… like they dont go on his ears. he wears Jean’s as a scarf? man to be reckoned with, he might be jesus second coming.

  • Joanne Farrall (Communication and Media Studies): Joanne shows passion to the studies in every single class. Whether you come into the class a strong or weak writer, you take away something from each class that not only improves your writing, but also prepares you for writing in future classes. Her lectures are the only ones that I look forward to, and I think I speak for everyone in the class when I way that Dr. Taylor is one awesome woman.

  • Kasia Muldner (Cognitive Science): In all honesty, I thought this class was going to be very difficult (and quite boring), and I believe if I did not have professor Kasia teaching this course, it would’ve been. During every class, she managed to keep me engaged and interested in what we are learning (which can be difficult to achieve in most of my other classes). You can tell she’s very passionate about her job and this course, she will often get excited during class discussions about programming. She is friendly, approachable, and very helpful, if a student is having difficulty understanding a concept, she will take the time to thoroughly explain it and answer any questions that arise. This, for me, is crucial in a class like this one. She turned what I thought was going to be my worst class into my favourite one. She really changed my views on what programming actually is, and made it more fun than I ever thought it could be! Kasia is my favourite faculty member because she goes above and beyond to make sure her students succeed. She makes her lectures very engaging while being enthusiastic. For someone who has never taken a computer science course she makes it easy to understand. If you are stuck on a concept she is more then welcome to help you until you understand it. Ms. Kasia Muldner has believed in me when I was at my lowest. She teaches a hard program which is a beginners programming course. I have no prior experience and I fell behind immensely in the course. She is very empathetic, encouraging, and patient. She does so much for her students and she is profound in her teaching. She is such a beautiful soul and I am blessed to have her as my Prof for Computational Methods. She has confidence in me and she does not give up. I’m a part of the online section of her NEURO1202 class and although I watch her teach online (and have yet to meet her in person!), her personality shines through when she’s lecturing, making the class enjoyable and enhancing my learning even further by keeping me engaged with the course material. I especially appreciate her inviting guests into the classroom to give us – her students – a reminder as to why we are taking this neuroscience course. For me, listening to guests who have these psychiatric diseases reminds me that what is being taught in class on the microscopic level affects people in our society today, which increases my passion to want to help people who struggle with these illnesses. Dr. Kim’s lectures are always informative, insightful, and I also appreciate that she likes to have fun in class at times! This is why Dr. Kim Hellemens is my favourite faculty member. • Melissa Redmond (Social Work): She is the REALEST person and professor that I have ever met an encountered. Most profs want you to do assignments because it is required in the syllabus but Melissa wants to you do your assignments and do them well because she believes we have potential and wants us to be performing at our best ability.

  • Michael Feuerherm (Engineering): Michael was new to teaching this year, and it was evident in the first few weeks as he began to fall into a new routine balancing teaching us while maintaining his own studies. However, I think this is what made him become the successful, innovative and knowledgeable professor he is now. I went form struggling and disliking his course to being very engaged and enjoying the course material. He continuously checks in with his students and adjusts in his schedule to ensure they have any and all extra support that they require to be successful. Michael makes a strong effort to get to know the names of his students, treating us as adults and people rather than numbers. His genuine passion for his department and studies shows through as he shares his course material with us. I have never felt bored in his class either, which is a feat.

  • Noah Schwartz (Political Science): Noah makes an effort to get to know each of us and does everything he can to make every class engaging and different from the last. He even helped me find a good running spot on campus in the winter. What an icon. Mr. Schwartz is very approachable regarding questions about course content or even everyday topics. He makes the most boring parts of public policy engaging and interesting.

  • Patricia Ballamingie (Geography and Enviromental Studies): When Professor Ballamingie teaches her lectures, it feels akin to a conversation, one spoken by a person who still remembers the hardship of being a student. With a sense of humor and a verity of stories she reminds us that it is perfectly fine to embarrass oneself because at our core we are all just people who try to do our best to succeed. • Stephane Goyette (French Language): Mr. Goyette is very engaging and makes every class interesting. It’s definitely fun to learn French in a way that’s different — but (in my opinion) better — than I have before.

  • Stephen Bassoon (Law & Legal Studies): he cares about the students and puts effort into getting them involved in class.

  • Steven Tasson (Law & Legal Studies): Professor Tasson always keeps the class interesting! I am never bored in his class and he is also a super lovely person as well. He genuinely cares about his students and you can tell in everything he does. Great professor!

  • Sydney Buttera (Chemistry): I feel like she can relate to the class and make it more interesting. I enjoy learning from her lectures. I also love how she plays music before we start sometimes, that makes it way better :) She’s an excellent teacher and makes me love chem. She keeps me engaged in class material, is fun to listen to, has the class encouraged to ask questions and get a good understanding of material. love her. She is a great professor as she keeps me engaged in class, explains topics very well, is accommodating and keeps class fun!

  • Tonya Davidson (Sociology and Anthropology): She’s funny and makes the content interesting. She takes the personal time to invest in students’ personal needs. She is also one of the most passionate teachers I have ever had which makes learning so much more interesting and obtainable. She engages and encourages students to apply knowledge outside of the classroom. In the FYSM Sociology of Ottawa she allows students a chance for out of the classroom learning as she gives lectures on walking tours. This professor goes above and beyond simply teaching class content, to make sure her students are not only learning, but enjoying themselves in the process. Her passion for the topic paired with her deep knowledge of sociology and Ottawa, excites her students and makes her class a highlight of my week. Professor Davidson fosters an environment of personal growth, community development, and academic success.

  • Tracy Hodgson-Drysale (Linguistics and Language Studies): Tracy is unlike any professor I’ve had, in the best way possible. She is so clearly passionate about her own research and teaching her passion to her class. By fostering a learning environment that allows students to feel relaxed, respected, and open, Tracy inadvertently encourages students to put forward their best thoughts and feelings in classroom discussions, which contributes positively to overall classroom environment and student camaraderie. When students are struggling (inevitable in Grad school), she does an excellent job of working with them and supporting them. I know of several other students who find Tracy’s thoughtful accommodations and genuine attentive attitude a stable pillar of support in this mad, mad world. If, in the future, I can be half the amazing researcher, teacher, and all-around person that Tracy is I will consider myself successful. Thanks, Tracy! Professor Tracy is very smart, supportive, understanding, humble and kind. She makes her classes a joy to attend and always brings very interesting topics to discuss. Moreover, she is always super nice toward each student and gives full support to achieve what we aim for. She is one of the best professors I’ve ever had and I wish her all the best. Tracy is my favourite faculty member because she is one of the most understanding professors I’ve had at university. She always welcomes students to come chat during her office hours, whether it be about potential research ideas or class projects. She is also super accommodating and is aware that sometimes life for students can be very busy. Lastly, she is also very interested and invested when you go and talk about other research ideas that may be different from her own.

  • Vanessa Thomas (Information Technology): Her class is my favourite one to go to even though it’s at 8:30a.m.: they are very interesting and she is an excellent professor. She is very kind and approachable, and you can tell that she truly cares about her students.

  • Vincent Andrisani (Communication and Media Studies): Amazing teacher, a nice person with a down to earth attitude and an easy to understand approach to class topics. Vincent is an outstanding professor that makes me want to come to class and learn. His lectures provide adequate information and real-life examples to make the material relatable to those taking the class

  • Wayne Horn (Communication and Media Studies): He is funny and easy to understand.

  • William Flynn (Sociology): Makes lectures very interactive, and engages students in learning sociological concepts.

  • Yasin Kherani (Business): He has been very good at explaining difficult concepts, answering any questions I have about assignments, and always makes the tutorial fun. You can tell he really wants all of us to succeed.

  • Zach Patterson (Neuroscience): Dr. Patterson is very friendly to his students and passionate about the subject he teaches. He encourages questions, even if they are wildly tangential to the lecture topic, and does his best to answer, but is not afraid to admit when he doesn’t know for sure. His class has made me very excited to take more neuroscience classes in the coming years, and I hope I find myself in his class again.

  • Zhicheng Gao (Information Technology): Because he is so nice and kind to the students and also is such a good teacher who tries to explain things to all the students in class!
