Lucid Energy Screens
Each residence building has a screen in its main foyer displaying the energy usage, water consumption, and CO2 production from that building, in real time. In the main lobby of Teraanga Commons (formerly Residence Commons) there is also a touch screen that allows users to view the energy, water, and CO2 data from each building in residence compared to one another. This building dashboard is also accessible on your personal computer here!
Water and High Efficiency Fixtures
All residence houses are eqipped with high-efficiency water fixtures including Teraanga Commons (formerly Residence Commons) itself. Water use dropped 65% and Carleton saves more than $20,000 a year.
Carleton University has committed to phasing out the sale of bottled water on campus over the next several years. In 2019 Carleton added 10 water bottle filling stations in high traffic areas and these have seen extensive use. That’s in addition to the more than 150 water fountains already installed across campus.

Green Globe Certifications
The Green Globes building assessment program is being used to design and assess all new buildings and major renovations on campus, ensuring sustainable buildings are a part of the campus community.
In Residence, our Green Globe Buildings are:
- Teraanga Commons (formerly Residence Commons) (4 Globes)
- Russell-Grenville House (4 Globes)
- Frontenac House (3 Globes)
- Lennox and Addington House (3 Globes)
The Department of Housing and Residence Life Services is the 2016 recipient of the Bronze Green Workplace certification from Carleton’s Sustainability Department.
The Caf
Certified Green Restaurant
the caf is a 3-Star Certified Green Restaurant. The Certification provides standards for restaurants on sustainable facilities and operations. It includes seven major areas of focus: Energy, Water Efficiency, Waste Reduction, Sustainable Food, Chemical & Pollution Reduction, Disposables, Building Materials. As Carleton Dining advances its culinary and facility operations, we are continually reviewing the GRA standards for opportunities to minimize our environmental impact.
Saving Water
Our dish washing machine outlets preserve water by having low flow nozzles that regulate its usage.
Energy Equipment
To help conserve water and energy, we source Energy Star certified equipment where possible for all new purchases.
Staff Training
Our staff participates in Sustainability, Energy & Water Conservation and Waste Management training sessions.
