Welcome to the Residence Newsletter!

The Residence Newsletter is sent to current students living on campus. Each edition is distributed by Carleton University’s Department of Housing and Residence Life Services and includes information specific to the Residence community such as Residence events, support services, and application deadlines. COVID-19 Updates

To keep our community safe, students who are confirmed COVID-19 positive or have COVID-19 symptoms are required to report their symptoms by calling the Residence Reception Desk at 613-520-5609.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, please complete a COVID-19 Rapid Test, if possible, within 48 hours prior to arriving at Health and Counselling Services.  Rapid tests are available for students to pick up at the Residence Reception Desk, which is open 24/7.

Introducing Faisa Omer: Carleton’s Racialized Residence Counsellor

Faisa Omer is the new Racialized Counsellor for Residence Counseling. Her academic background includes two Neuroscience degrees from Carleton and a Masters in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. Faisa is passionate about serving students of colour through her role. In her spare time, Faisa is a studio photographer whose work has been shown at the Ottawa Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Alberta.

Now Hiring: First Year Connection Mentors

Help us welcome new students throughout their transition to Carleton University by becoming a mentor with the First Year Connections (FYC) program. The Student Experience Office is hiring Peer Mentors who will facilitate guided conversations that cover key themes and subjects that will support incoming students through their first 6 weeks of the fall term. The FYC Peer Mentor Positions are part-time paid positions for September and October, with training occurring during Summer 2023.

Virtual Spring Career Fair

Wednesday, March 22, 10am-4pm

All Carleton students and alumni are invited to attend the Virtual Spring Career Fair on Wednesday, March 22! The Career Fair will give you the opportunity to:

  • Chat with recruiters and professionals. Meetings will take place as speed-networking-style conversations (about 10 minutes). This is done primarily through text chat (though some employers may use audio or video calls).
  • Explore full-time, part-time, summer, and co-op opportunities and browse current job openings.
  • Discover a range of organizations to see if you would be a good match. Employers will continually be added in the lead up to the event.
  • Increase your chances of advancing your applications, as employers are able to download resumes of those who attended the Career Fair.
  • Optimize your time by learning about multiple employers in one virtual space.

Preparing for Move Out

All students are required to vacate their room no later than midnight the day following their final exam. Students with no take homes/exams are required to vacate their room by 12:00 am midnight on April 15, 2023.

Lock Changes, Charges, and Residence Floor Vacuums

Replacement metal keys require a lock change, which incurs a cost of $100 per key. If you lose a key, please report the loss immediately to the Residence Reception Desk on the 2nd floor of the Residence Commons building.  After-hours calls to replace locks and keys on weekends may result in additional charges.

As you may already be aware vacuums are available on each floor of every building in order for students to share.  After use, be sure to put the vacuum back in its designated area for the next student to borrow.


Multi-Faith Prayer and Meditation Space Now Open

Located in 118 Leeds house, the Multi-Faith Prayer and Meditation Space is intended for independent and drop-in use 24/7. The multifaith and mediation room is not available for impromptu or planned gatherings.


Prescott Gym 2SLGBTQ+ Inclusion Hours

The Residence Gym in Prescott House will hold 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion hours on Mondays from 8:30pm – 10:00pm, Wednesdays 4:30pm – 6:00pm, and Sundays from 2:30pm – 4:00pm.


The Raven's Roost is Now Open

The Raven’s Roost is now open! The Raven’s Roost is a student lounge and recreation area located in the tunnel level between Stormont and Dundas House. Hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6pm-12am, and Friday and Saturday from 6pm-1am. Come by to hang out and play video games, ping pong, foosball and more! Any questions or concerns should be directed to the Raven’s Roost supervisors, Taylor Maudlin (TaylorMaudlin@cunet.carleton.ca) and Kofi Sakyi (KofiSakyi@cunet.carleton.ca). Join the Campus Activity Board (CAB) throughout March as our student-led group will be providing the perfect opportunity to meet and socialize with other students throughout the winter term.

Life Skills 101 Podcast

The Life Skills 101 Podcast is a series of episodes that will engage, empower and encourage Carleton students to identify, grow and reflect upon life skill development, through various enriching episodes featuring young Carleton Alumni. Alumni will share their successes and challenges to support students in building persistence and capacity and provide a space for skill development and reflection for listeners.

Students who complete a Podcast Reflection are entered to win $25 toward their Campus Card.

Celebrating the Black Canadian Experience: An Evening of Poetry

Join the Umoja Black Community Engagement Program and the Institute of African Studies for an evening of poetry! The theme for the evening is “The Black Experience,” where we will hear from local and student poets about the good and bad of experiencing Blackness and celebrating our differences.

This event is free and closed to students, staff and community members who identify as African, Caribbean, or Black.

Family Feud 

And the survey says……Family Feud is coming to Fenn Lounge on March 5th at 6pm. Come out to support your fellow residents. Audience will participate in fun activities to win prizes as well.

Panel Discussion: International Women’s Day

Wednesday March 8 at 3pm in Fenn Lounge

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Housing and Residence Life Services is hosting a panel discussion. An opportunity for all to learn from current female leaders at Carleton University and hear about their experiences, their roles, and thoughts about leadership, intersectionality, and imposter syndrome. Attendees have a chance to win prizes!

Light refreshments will be served.

Earth Hour

Switch off and give an hour for Earth. On March 25 at 8:30 pm, spend 60 minutes doing something positive for our planet. It’s that simple. Carleton Residence is planning fun activities for you to unplug for an hour. Stay tuned for more information on our Instagram and through posters on the floors.

Mental Health Resources

Residence Counselling– Counselling appointments are available Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm for residence students only. To book an appointment, please call 613-520-2600 ext. 8061.

Empower Me – All Carleton undergraduate students have access to additional support through Empower Me, a mental health and wellness service that seeks to contribute to a resilient student community by supporting existing on-campus mental health resources. Cal 1-833-628-5589 (toll-free), available 24/7.

Resource Guide – Carleton provides a wide variety of accessible resources and services that allow students to maximize and manage their mental health and wellness. This guide is meant to be flexible, where students are able to use supports in combination or move through the guide as needed.

Wellness Services Navigator – The Wellness Services Navigator has been designed to help navigate Carleton students to a curated list of mental health and wellness resources. When using the Wellness Services Navigator, you’ll be asked a series of questions regarding your wellness and the navigator will suggest some resources that are available to you, both on and off campus.
