Meet The Team featuring Nathaniel Jewitt!
What do a quiet office, a dog, an adult colouring book and a ninja minion all have in common?
Believe it or not, in my role as a Residence Counsellor you will find me working with all of these things! The first one at least shouldn’t be too surprising. The Residence Counselling office, located in 131 Renfrew Building, is generally a calm and welcoming office where any student living in residence can come for free, confidential, and non-judgmental counselling. We are open Monday to Friday from September to May, and we meet with students by appointment or walk-in for all different kinds of stresses, concerns and questions. Sometimes I meet with students several times over the course of the year, and see them gradually make important changes in their life. At other times, I might meet with a student only once or twice before they figure out their next steps in getting well. I love this variety in my job, it really keeps me on my toes!
Over the summer, my job focuses on planning wellness and counselling-related programs. For instance, starting in the fall of 2016, we are working on setting-up regular office hours with Blue, our resident therapy dog! One of Blue’s strengths is teaching people to be mindful and to live in the present moment, but if you’re not a dog lover you can also drop-by our Wellness Room and do some adult colouring or other relaxing activities. I try to do some sitting meditation or other mindfulness practice every day – I find it really helps me manage the inevitable ups and downs of life.
If you’re confused about how the ninja minion relates to my job as a Residence Counsellor, I don’t blame you. The short answer is that I coordinate a group of residence volunteers called the Mental Health Champions and we have adopted this minion as our unofficial mascot. The general idea of our group is to spread ideas about positive psychology and to help create a healthy residence community. If that sounds interesting, please find us on facebook. Or feel free to send me an email with any questions about this program or anything else related to residence counselling – firstname.lastname@example.org .
Wishing everyone a great 2016-2017 school year!
